This is an safety accessory for specific Panasonic WhisperCeiling Exhaust Fans that will provide extra protection in the event of a fire. In a fire the radiation damper will shut to prevent the spread of air because of a 165 degree Fahrenheit fuseable link.
It has a galvanized steel frame and will fit in either a wood frame ceiling or a T-bar ceiling. When installed in conjunction with one of the listed Panasonic WhisperCeiling Exhaust Fans the radation damper willl meet or exceed NFPA-90A (National Fire Protection Association) requirements and UL 555C. Local fire codes sometimes requre that a radiation damper be installed with an exhaust fan in fire-rated floor-ceiling and roof-ceiling designs.
Note that the radiation damper will sit beneath the fan housing, so it will add about 5 inches to the overall height of the ceiling fan. It may not, therefore, be able to fit within all joist cavities.
