Most AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt, and button batteries contain heavy metals including lead, cadmium, nickel, and mercury. In California battery recycling is mandated, and most states regulate the disposal of batteries in some way. Regardless, batteries that contain heavy metals should not be disposed of in the trash where they could end up being incinerated or sent to a landfill. Batteries should be recycled.
